Nephrology

The Division of Nephrology is available for patients at any stage of kidney disease. Our goal is to provide the highest quality care while helping patients manage their condition.

Nephrology is a specialisation within Internal Medicine which focusses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of kidney disorders. Nephrologists treat kidney problems, high blood pressure, fluid and mineral imbalance, dialysis when the kidneys do not function, and form part of the team along with surgeons during a kidney transplant.

Our kidneys perform the very important function of filtering waste from our blood. The kidneys also regulate our blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and production of red blood cells. In the case of kidney disease, the ability to remove waste products from the body, maintain the correct water and electrolyte balance, and promote red cell production is affected.

If you are suffering from kidney disease, you may experience symptoms such as lethargy, weakness, shortness of breath, swelling, loss of appetite, fatigue, high levels of potassium or urea in the blood, and congestive heart failure. There are many different factors that may cause kidney disease, and it’s very important for your nephrologist to diagnose and treat the underlying cause.

Diagnosis of kidney failure is confirmed by blood tests such as blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and glomerular filtration rate (GFR). These measure the build-up of waste products in the blood. Your doctor may also require you to get a urine test to measure the amount of protein, detect the presence of abnormal cells, or measure the concentration of electrolytes. An abdominal ultrasound or a kidney biopsy may be prescribed if necessary.

As kidney failure has serious consequences, it’s very important for you to take prevention and treatment seriously. If you are a patient of diabetes or hypertension, ask your doctor about periodic checks for kidney function.

We see patients with a wide range of conditions, including diabetes and hypertension; inherited disorders such as polycystic kidney disease; and end-stage renal disease. We also help patients through follow up management of a kidney transplant.

We offer both inpatient and OPD care to all nephrology patients round the clock. This includes counselling, management of all kidney disorder, procedures and the support of systems affected by kidney diseases.

For advice and treatment of any kidney-related condition, schedule a consultation with the expert nephrologists at the Medcare Nephrology Department.
